Chiropractic Care & Oxytocin
I know when you think of chiropractic care, you likely think of it as a treatment for physical complaints such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches. However, recent research has discovered an interesting connection between chiropractic care and emotional well-being, specifically through the release of the hormone oxytocin.
Oxytocin is a hormone that is often called the "love hormone" or the "bonding hormone" because it plays a crucial role in social bonding, trust, and feelings of well-being. It is released naturally in the body during activities such as hugging, kissing, and breastfeeding, and has been associated with a range of positive health outcomes, including reducing stress and anxiety, improving mood, and promoting social behavior.
In a recent study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, researchers found that chiropractic adjustments can lead to an immediate increase in serum oxytocin levels. The study involved 52 healthy adults who received either a chiropractic adjustment to their thoracic spine or a sham adjustment. The researchers found that those who received the real chiropractic adjustment experienced a significant increase in serum oxytocin levels compared to those who received the sham adjustment.
So, what does that mean for chiropractic patients?
That in addition to the physical benefits of spinal adjustments, chiropractic care may also have positive effects on mood and emotional well-being. By increasing oxytocin levels, chiropractic care may help reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and promote feelings of social bonding and well-being.
Of course I have to note that this study is still preliminary, and more research always is needed. However, the findings are promising and suggest that chiropractic care may offer a unique approach to promoting overall health and wellness.
